John is currently plowing through and near the end of a heavy tome over one thousand pages entitled Christianity: the First Three Thousand Years. It is remarkably fascinating and accessible reading, although it certainly does take a while to get through. The first thousand years are about the Greek and Hebrew antecedents to the Bible and the beginnings of the Christian church. From there it travels through the history of every type of Christianity you have ever heard of and many, many others you haven't. He is emerging from this labor with a fresh and expanded perspective on how they all evolved and interrelate with each other. It's not a light read, but if you are called, very worthwhile.
A new and moving documentary currently in the theatres is called Buck. It is the real story of a horse trainer named Buck Brannaman, in the tradition of 'horse whisperers' who 'starts' hoses with sensitivity and love rather than force. He says, 'The horse is a mirror to your soul. A lot of times rather than helping people with horse problems, I'm helping horses with people problems." Good movie with wisdom, well worth seeing.

In prayer we speak out to another and yet there is a second form of communication taking place simultaneously: we are also speaking to ourselves.
We need to do this because we are a little deaf. It is only through speaking out that we put into words... |
